During the 1930s, buoyed by Fascist propaganda, numerous holiday colonies and health-oriented facilities sprang up to welcome families and children from across the region. Following the Second World War, Cattolica experienced a demographic and economic boom, growing into an internationally renowned tourist centre whilst retaining its traditional charm.

What to See in Cattolica

Cattolica’s historic centre is rich in monuments and sites of interest that tell the story of the town and its maritime heritage, and throughout the buildings you’ll notice distinctive decorations known as “Occhi di Cubia” (eyes of Cubia). Considered emblems of Cattolica, these apotropaic eye-shaped symbols draw from Phoenician or Greek traditions and were used to protect fishermen. Ancient fishing vessels therefore had these two eyes carved into their bows, their primary purpose being to ward off the perils of the sea and keep deep-water creatures at bay.

In the area known as “Catolica Vecia” (Old Cattolica), the town’s oldest quarter, stands the Church of Sant’Apollinare, built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and housing works of considerable importance. Nearby is the Rocca Malatestiana, erected between 1490 and 1491 by Lombard craftsmen under the direction of Pandolfo Malatesti, though the building has been modified several times over the centuries.

The heart of Cattolica is Piazza Primo Maggio, one of the town’s liveliest and most beautiful squares, also known as “Piazza delle Sirene” (Mermaids’ Square) thanks to its distinctive fountain featuring three siren sculptures created in 1928 by sculptor Giuseppe Casalini. The square is surrounded by cafés, restaurants and shops, making it perfect for relaxation, shopping or enjoying an aperitivo at sunset. History enthusiasts should visit the Museo della Regina (Museum of the Queen), housed in a former hospital building and recounting Cattolica’s history and its connection to the sea. Inside you can admire Roman archaeological artefacts, tools used by local fishermen and a collection of historic vessels.

Another unmissable attraction is the Cattolica Aquarium, considered the largest on the Adriatic and amongst Italy’s most important. The aquarium houses numerous tanks containing thousands of marine species from around the world, including sharks, jellyfish, seahorses and many more. The aquarium experience is enriched with themed routes and activities that reveal not only marine fauna but also river environments and their biodiversity.

For theatrical performances, shows and events, Cattolica boasts two outstanding venues: the enchanting Teatro della Regina (opened in 1996) and the Arena della Regina, an evocative open-air square. The Teatro della Regina is one of the first theatre buildings constructed after the Second World War and exemplifies the classic “Italian theatre” style with a capacity of over 600 seats. The Arena della Regina, with its 5,000 seats, hosts cultural events, shows and performances throughout the summer.

How to Get to Cattolica

Cattolica is easily accessible by car thanks to its position along the Adriatic coast and efficient transport infrastructure. The town is well connected to both northern and southern Italy via the A14 motorway, whilst the SS16 state road provides access to other Adriatic coastal towns. Travellers from northern Italy can reach Cattolica by taking the A1 motorway from Milan to Bologna, then the A14 to the Cattolica—San Giovanni—Gabicce exit; from the south, take the A14 towards Bologna to the same exit.

The town also has the Cattolica-San Giovanni-Gabicce railway station, situated on the Bologna-Ancona rail line and served by regional and intercity trains connecting Cattolica to Bologna, Rimini, Ancona and other coastal cities. Regional bus services connect Cattolica to other Riviera locations, whilst long-distance coaches provide links to other regions.

The nearest airports to Cattolica are Rimini Federico Fellini Airport, approximately 15 km away, and Ancona Raffaello Sanzio Airport, less than 80 km distant. Bologna’s international airport is located some 140 km away.
