Bologna enjoys a temperate climate largely due to its position at the southern edge of the Po Valley Plain, close to the foothills of the Apennines. Its climate can be described as semi-continental Paduan, meaning hot and particularly humid summers, while winters are cold and mostly damp. Before you plan a stay to explore Bologna, it’s worth getting to grips with the weather conditions throughout the year.
Generally speaking, spring and autumn (mid-April to late May and September to October respectively) are the best times to visit the city, as the climate is mild and temperatures are pleasant, especially during the day. During these periods, the city also hosts numerous events and festivals, including the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, one of the world’s most important publishing fairs for children’s literature, and the Bologna Jazz Festival. Autumn in particular is an excellent time to visit thanks to comfortable temperatures and the beauty of the autumn colours, though October and November tend to be the rainiest months, so do come prepared.
Winter in Bologna is often cold and damp, with temperatures dropping below freezing in January and February and occasional snowfall. Summer, by contrast, brings long daylight hours, plenty of sunshine and numerous evening events, though you’ll need to be mindful of high temperatures and humidity, which can make sightseeing challenging. During the height of summer, temperatures can reach 36–38°C, though the perceived temperature may feel even higher. What’s more, Bologna attracts large crowds during these months, prices tend to rise, and popular attractions often become very busy.
The hottest months of the year in Bologna are June, September, July and August, when the monthly average temperature reaches 30 °C, while the coldest months of February, December and January the thermometer drops up to -1 °C.
